Résumé
Although they look like carnivorous plants, scrofula are medicinal plants that are good for the skin. In this macro shot, we see small flowers, half a centimetre wide, with a vaporous background, the bokeh. This technical term derives from the Japanese verb bokeru, meaning "to blur". This mysterious plant goes by the name of Genjin (Scrophularia ningpoensis or S. buergeriana). Interestingly, figwort is also used in Europe to treat the skin. This is a fine example of the "convergence of knowledge", a concept of ethnopharmacology that connects distant traditions. Rich in therapeutic compounds such as anti-inflammatory iridoids, figwort root is used in the formulation of traditional Kampo remedies, including Shinsen taitsuko ointment. Research into these preparations is helping to improve our understanding of wound healing and the factors influencing the levels of active ingredients.

De manière intéressante, les scrofulaires sont également employées en Europe pour soigner la peau. Voici un bel exemple de « convergence des savoirs », notion d'ethnopharmacologie connectant des traditions pourtant éloignées. Riche en composés thérapeutiques comme les iridoides anti-inflammatoires, la racine de scrofulaire entre dans la formulation de remèdes traditionnels Kampo, dont la pommade Shinsen taitsuko. Des recherches sur ces préparations aident à mieux comprendre la cicatrisation et quels sont les facteurs infuençant les teneurs en principes actifs.
