Prevention in community pharmacy: a care act integrated into pharmaceutical practic

Prévention en pharmacie d’officine : un acte de soin intégré à la pratique pharmaceutique

Résumé

Prevention is defined by the WHO in 1948 as “the set of measures aimed at avoiding or reducing the number and severity of diseases, accidents, and disabilities.” Prevention primarily revolves around pathology and risk factors. Thus, we refer to primary prevention (reducing the occurrence of new cases in a population), secondary prevention (detecting a disease before symptoms appear), tertiary prevention (preventing complications and relapses of diseases), and quaternary prevention (protecting patients from overmedicalization, a definition closely related to the prevention of iatrogenesis). This classification has been further complemented by a structured approach based on populations, where prevention is described as universal (for the entire population), selective (for a subgroup), or targeted (for specific factors). While the community pharmacist is most often associated with prevention—particularly through vaccination and screening actions, which are the focus of extensive institutional communication campaigns—prevention is one of the pharmacist's core responsibilities, regardless of their place of practice. Indeed, the pharmacist is regarded as one of the key players in prevention due to their positioning within the healthcare system (as the gatekeeper of medications) [1]. The objective of the workshop was to explore the pharmacist’s involvement in the field of prevention through the experiences of practitioners working in primary care and healthcare facilities, as well as through feedback from representatives leading promising interventions.
