Predicting mosquito abundance rates from weather conditions

Résumé

Introduction: Mosquitoes are a significant public concern because of the nuisance they cause and their role as vectors in the transmission of several pathogens of public health importance. For floodwater mosquitoes, weather conditions are key factors in determining the rate of mosquito abundance. Indeed, precipitation triggers egg hatching after flooding of breeding sites, and temperature controls the duration of immature aquatic development until adult emergence. Methods: We developed a mechanistic model that describes the population dynamics of floodwater mosquitoes as a function of only the most accessible meteorological variables, precipitation and temperature. Results: The developed model was applied to fit experimental field data of Aedes caspius population dynamics [1]. The model proved useful and accurately described field data of a two-site CO2 trapping survey [1]. Conclusion: Such a model would therefore be essential for predicting mosquito abundance rates for phenology purposes and in vector control programs.
