Lichens, Liverworts, Mosses and Hornworts: Sarah Mary Fitton's House as a Hub for Cryptogam Transfers in 19th Century Paris

Résumé

What we want to show today is how, despite the odds, Sarah Mary Fitton found herself at the heart of a network of exchanges of knowledge, cryptogamic plant specimens, and wax models. In more ways than one, Sarah Mary Fitton spent her life in-between worlds, and her major achievement, apart from writing and publishing books that have outlived her although she was not allowed to sign them, is to have succeeded in making her house in Paris a social and scientific hub, organizing social events, scientific reunions, but also through the constant exchange of letters and plant specimens. The last part of this talk will focus on her skill in modelling wax flowers and how this skill was, in turn, a way for her to blend both her thorough botanical knowledge, her artistic and pedagogical skills, while taking part in the 19th century European scientific adventures and exchanges acoss the world.
